Mt. Gox pushes its creditor repayment deadline back another year, to Oct. 31, 2027
Summary
Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi has moved the deadline for the defunct exchange’s base, early lump-sum and intermediate repayments from Oct. 31, 2026 to Oct. 31, 2027 (Japan time), with the court’s permission, according to a notice dated Oct. 16.
The notice says repayments are largely complete for creditors who finished the required procedures without problems, but that many creditors have not completed those procedures and a “considerable number” have not been paid because of issues during the repayment process.
Wallets linked to Mt. Gox still hold about 34,388 BTC, worth roughly $2.8 billion, according to Arkham data cited by Decrypt; Cointelegraph put the figure at about 34,400 BTC and noted the notice does not say how many creditors remain unpaid.
The outlets count the delays differently: Decrypt called this the fourth one-year extension, while Cointelegraph’s headline called it the sixth extension, counting two shorter extensions in 2023.
Key facts
- The trustee said it is “desirable to make the Repayments to such rehabilitation creditors to the extent reasonably practicable,” and directed inquiries to the MTGOX online claim filing system.
- Decrypt said the deadline was first moved from October 2023 to October 2024, then to October 2025 and last year to October 2026, citing the same incomplete procedures and processing issues.
- Decrypt said Arkham data shows no transfers from the estate since June, when it moved 10,422.65 BTC, then worth more than $739 million, mostly to a new wallet, without any sign of a sale or new repayment round.
- Cointelegraph said Mt. Gox began repaying creditors in bitcoin and bitcoin cash in July 2024 and said in March 2025 that more than 19,500 creditors had been repaid.
- Decrypt said roughly 850,000 BTC went missing in the exchange’s 2014 collapse and that a Tokyo court approved its rehabilitation plan in 2021 to return about $9 billion in bitcoin and bitcoin cash to an estimated 24,000 creditors.
