World launches World ID for banks and makes its Zoom deepfake check generally available
Summary
World, the identity project co-founded by Sam Altman, launched World ID for banking and finance on Sunday, a suite meant to help financial firms confirm a real person is behind transactions and requests, The Block and Decrypt reported; The Block called it World’s first offering aimed at a specific industry.
The suite bundles the World ID app, World ID for Zoom and World ID for Agents (also called AgentKit), which lets a person delegate identity proofs to an AI agent, according to The Block.
World ID for Zoom is now generally available after a limited beta that began in April, and shows a “Human Badge” on verified participants’ video after comparing an Orb iris-scan image, a live selfie and the video feed, Cointelegraph reported.
World named Bain Capital, Pantera Capital, VanEck Funds, OpenExchange and Outtake as design partners, but The Block said the release did not name any bank using the product or disclose pricing.
Key facts
- Decrypt said banks could use the proofs to require a verified human to approve ACH and wire transfers or to recover an account, without collecting documents or storing other personal data, according to World.
- The Block said World cited a Deloitte forecast that AI-enabled fraud losses in the U.S. could reach $40 billion by 2027, up from an estimated $12.3 billion in 2023, and said more than 18 million people now hold a Proof of Human.
- The Block said World co-founder Alex Blania unveiled the product at the Money20/20 conference and that Tools for Humanity, World’s main developer, has joined Zoom’s independent software vendor exchange program.
- Decrypt said hosts will soon be able to require verification in the waiting room before a call.
- Decrypt said World’s iris-scanning has drawn regulatory action in places including Hong Kong, South Korea, Spain, Kenya and Brazil over biometric data.
- Outlets cite slightly different figures for the 2024 Arup deepfake fraud: Cointelegraph said about $25 million, Decrypt said about $25.6 million.
